Application

CANIPUR - calcigel is a feed supplement containing organic calcium, top-quality gelatine and vitamin D3.

Calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D3 and gelatine need to be in a well-balanced interaction if they are to be effective. Only then can they forestall bone mineralisation deficiencies in growing dogs, calcium deficiencies in pregnant and lactating bitches, and demineralisation in elder dogs.

General findings of nutritional science

Calcium is an important factor for development, strength and durability of bones and teeth. Calcium deficiency due to insufficient supply in food or increased requirements during growth, pregnancy, lactation and/or strenuous exercise will initially result in stiffness and low-grade lameness. Long-term calcium deficiency can lead to bone enlargement and inflammation, joint degradation and even bone fractures. Particularly with growing dogs, lack of calcium results in irreversible bone deformation. For this reason it is essential to maintain blood calcium at consistent levels and to provide your dog with a regular source of quickly and reliably resorbed calcium. This requirement is met when calcium is offered as a chelated compound in which organic calcium is bound to amino acids. In this form, it is absorbed into the blood from the intestinal tract and immediately transported to where the system needs calcium, at the same time placing important amino acids at the body's disposal.

Gelatine is derived directly from protein. Its amino acid composition is the same as that of collagen, which is the scleroprotein in joint cartilage, connective tissue and sinews and as such is responsible for their strength, durability and elasticity. In healthy cartilage and sinew tissues, equilibrium exists between collagen build-up and its enzymatic breakdown. If this equilibrium is disturbed owing to undue stress on tissues, injuries, inflammatory processes in the joints or malnutrition, the result is a situation in which breakdown predominates over build-up and the quantity of basic substance decreases. This impairs functional capacity, leading to arthrosis and chronic sinew damage. All of these processes can be forestalled if building blocks for cartilage and sinew metabolism are supplied systematically and consistently. If supply is increased in time, the degenerative processes can even be reversed, since the high lysine content of gelatine promotes build-up and metabolism in the muscles.

Dicalcium phosphate supplies both calcium and phosphorus, which is, in addition to vitamin D3, the most important ally of calcium in strengthening bone structure.

Vitamin D3 regulates calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and promotes uptake of these minerals by bone structures. In the presence of D3 deficiency, calcium cannot be used efficiently, as it is excreted without having been absorbed and therefore has no effect whatsoever.
