INFOBOX
Is garlic poisonous for horses?
This question can clearly be answered with a "no". On the contrary, garlic is one of the oldest medicinal plants and most of us also appreciate the very typical taste of garlic. Even if scientific proof of a life-prolonging effect could not be provided, it is now known that garlic cloves contain the active ingredient aliin in addition to its sulphur-containing secondary substances. This combination appears to have anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant properties as well as a bactericidal and fungicidal effect. The high content of essential oils provides the typical vapors on the skin or in the breath. A pleasant side effect: flies, mosquitoes and other insects avoid this typical smell. If horses are fed garlic they are much less likely to be bothered by such nuisances.
