General findings of nutritional science
Essential oils are found in high concentrations in thyme, fennel, spruce, elderberry, and anise. They strengthen the immune system and have antimicrobial properties, significantly reducing the risk of respiratory disease. In addition, essential oils have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and mucolytic effects, particularly in the bronchial area. The mucolytic component liquefies mucus and makes it easier to transport. The anti-inflammatory component ultimately reduces the urge to cough.
Mucilage from mallow, coltsfoot, carob, and ribwort plantain forms a protective layer on the mucous membranes of the respiratory system. This significantly reduces susceptibility to diseases, especially dust allergies, and alleviates existing inflammation..
Tannins cause a change in the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, making it difficult for pathogens to take hold. Mallow, ribwort plantain, elderberry, and oak also have analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in the throat area.t.
Flavonoids are particularly present in coltsfoot, licorice, and elderberry and inhibit the growth of viruses..
Carotinoids from nettle and coltsfoot are converted into vitamin A, which stabilizes the immune system and improves the regenerative capacity of mucous membrane cells..
Vitamin C is found in spruce and stinging nettle and stimulates the body's own defenses.
Saponins (in licorice) change the consistency of mucus, making it easier to cough up.
Lichen acids from Iceland moss have a significant antibacterial effect and thus protect the respiratory system from infections.
INFOBOX
Cough herbs for horses
When horses cough, the source of the problem should always be examined very carefully. Over half of the horses in our latitudes suffer from breathing problems, which are often chronic. A detailed diagnosis by the veterinarian provides information about the form of the disease. The main focus during the treatment will be on avoiding dust (washing hay, avoiding dusty riding or sandy areas) and getting plenty of exercise in the fresh air. The additional administration of expectorant and revitalizing herbs supports and relaxes the coughing horse's respiratory function. In addition, the secondary plant substances in cough herbs improve the immune system and thus prevent infection.
