Features

Natural

EURO-LIN® is a natural litter obtained from the raw material flax. The flax plant, also known as linseed, is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. The individual cultivation guarantees that residues of plant-protective agents are not present in the product. Normally, linen isn’t fed upon by horses due to its naturally bitter components and therefore EURO-LIN constitutes the ideal basis for controlled feeding.

Healthy

EURO-LIN is purified, and roots and dust are removed repeatedly using a large-scale method. It contains natural compounds, which bind urea and consequently inhibit the formation of ammonia. Therefore EURO-LIN litter leads to a decisive improvement of the stable climate and thus helps to prevent dust allergies or ammonia induced irritations of the respiratory tracts. Furthermore, the good bonding of moisture and the reduction of ammonia in the litter prevents hoof problems.

Low Costs

EURO-LIN in a 20 kg bale is compact and has a great spreading volume. 3-5 bales are required for the initial use in a 10 - 12 m² horse box; after 14 days between half a bale and one bale is littered weekly. As a result an average monthly requirement of 2 – 4 bales occurs. EURO-LIN is being delivered in a recyclable package to guarantee cleanness and dryness of the product.

Economically Sound

Littering EURO-LIN is profitable in several regards. Because of a lower expenditure of work, time can be saved (apart from the daily removal of horse manure, removal of wet parts and new littering is required only once a week). Costs are further decreased by low litter consumption. Stock capacities can be reduced by up to 85 % compared to straw and the minor manure quantity produced leads to a considerable decrease of removal costs.

Ecologically Sound

EURO-LIN reduces the resulting manure quantity by up to 75 % because of its low consumption. The dung is completely compostable and undergoes rapid biodegradation due to its structure (approximately two times faster than straw). Consequently, it represents an ideal fertiliser with a low pH value. Problems known from saw and wood shavings concerning removal are non-existent.

Absorbent

The high absorbency capacity of EURO-LIN allows it to absorb up to the fivefold of its own weight. Due to the inner structure of the flax shives moisture is bonded permanently. Thus the surface of the litter stays loosely and dry.

Some Tips concerning Handling

In general:

To take full advantage of Euro-Lin, a firm mattress must be prepared and well cared for. The mattress litter is economizing with other litter material, cares for joints and hooves of the horse, gives a warm support and prevents (if prepared correctly) the development of ammonia.

Basic litter:

A 10-12 m² horse box requires 3-5 Euro-Lin bales; in the beginning, the height of the litter should be 5-7 cm. In order to activate the capillary system of the flax-straw (optimal binding of urine), and to accelerate the formation of the mattress, the fresh litter can be evenly moistened with 5-10 litres of water out of a sprinkling nozzle.

Mattress care:

During the first week, a slow build-up of the mattress takes place; during this process, the tread in bottom layer serves as a warmth insulator and urine binder, while the top layer keeps dry and loose. During this time, only the removal of horse droppings is necessary (the more often, the better) and the top layer has to be smoothly raked.

After the first week, the execution of daily removal of horse droppings and the levelling of the top layer should continuously take place; very damp spots of the flax-straw should be carefully removed one to two times a week and be refilled with the appropriate fresh amount (0,5-1 bale/week). While doing so, the bottom layer of the litter should not be loosened or turned around (once oxygen enters into the bottom layer, it causes development of ammonia). As with any litter, out of hygienic reasons, it is recommended to change the entire litter and to clean the horse box.

Advice:

Although horses normally do not eat the flax-straw because of its natural bitter constituents, out of pure boredom or unbalanced feeding, some tend to "stuff" themselves by nibbling at either the paddock fence, the wooden box wall or the litter. Even though, flax-straw as well as other grain straw is easy to digest, the intake of bigger amounts could, of course, lead to digestive disturbance. Especially with the first litter, for example by adding sufficient roughage, one should keep an eye on horses which feed on excessive amounts of litter.
