General findings of nutritional science
Essential oils in a highly concentrated form are found in thyme, fennel, spruce, elder, and aniseed. They strengthen the immune system and have antimicrobial properties, thereby considerably reducing the risk of respiratory disease. The oils also have an anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic and mucolytic effect, especially in the bronchial region. By the mucolytic component, the mucus will become liquefied and transportable. Finally, the anti-inflammatory component reduces coughing fits.
Mucins derive from marshmallow, coltsfoot, carob, and ribwort build a protective layer on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. They reduce proneness to diseases (particularly in allergy to dust) and give quick relief in case of inflammation.
Tannins effect a change in the mucous membranes of mouth and throat, so that it is more difficult for pathogenic organisms to remain there. Marshmallow, coltsfoot, elder, and oak have an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect on the throat.
Flavonoids are particularly found in coltsfoot, liquorice and elder, and inhibit viral growth.
Carotinoids from nettle and coltsfoot are converted to vitamin A, a vitamin which stabilises the immune defence and increases the regenerative capacity of mucous membrane cells.
Vitamin C abundant in spruce and nettle stimulates the body‘s defences.
Saponins (in liquorice root) change the mucus consistency and ease its discharge by coughing.
Lichen acids from Icelandic lichen have a positive anti-bacterial effect, thereby protecting the respiratory tract from infections.
