General findings of nutritional science
The original English term "BARF" now stands for Bones And Raw Foods, which means "bones and raw food". Thus is expressed the eating habits of wild dogs and wolves which eat almost all the corpse of a predator. After eating the corpse's raw flesh, consumption includes the entrails of the digestion tract with its fermented content, as well as bones and cartilage. Additionally, plants such as wild vegetables, fruits and herbs are also often consumed.
During barfing, it is not always easy to provide the necessary ration. If that be the case, it is important to prevent recurring deficiencies and prevent intestinal stomach problems like constipation or diarrhoea.
The average barf-ration normally is ¾ of raw meat and ¼ of fruits and vegetables but, without meat elements from beasts of prey, the above ration, for example in offals, in epidermis and hypodermis, bones and cartilage, the stomach and intestinal content, as well as multifarious wild plants, is missing. These ingredients are crucial for a healthy and successful barfing. Should the non-meat components of beasts of prey be unavailable in the daily barf-ration, another versatile and safe replacement should be provided.
Innards have a high content of essential fatty acids as well as natural minerals and trace elements. Linseed is an ideal substitute because of its high-quality omega-3 fatty acids and seaweed meal with a high proportion of natural and easily digestible minerals and trace elements.
Skin and coat supply the organism with organic sulphur among other things. This is contained in MSM in a natural and bioavailable form.
Cartilage with its high-quality amino acids for the development of joints and tendons can be adequately replaced by gelatine.
Bones provide the dog with minerals that ensure the resilience and strength of the musculoskeletal system. Calcium in particular must therefore be specifically supplemented.
Stomach and intestinal contents in their pre-digested form are a reliable source of vital substances, which must be added in the right proportions as vitamins, minerals and trace elements. It also contains fiber for a smooth and even digestive process, which is also contained in apple pomace.
Wild herbs support the metabolism (milk thistle, artichoke, dandelion, licorice) and the digestive process (fennel, aniseed, caraway, lovage, nettle, birch, Iceland moss). They also strengthen the musculoskeletal system (ginger, devil's claw).
Wild vegetables serve as a healthy source of vitamins and crude fiber. These include parsley with its natural vitamin C and carrots with their high beta-carotene content.
Fruits such as bananas provide necessary minerals and easily digestible energy.
Berries contain procyanides in their skin, which are highly effective antioxidants that strengthen the immune system and protect the muscles. This is particularly true of grape seed flour.
