General findings of nutritional science
In situations of physical and mental stress, the body needs highly concentrated and immediately absorbable regeneration substances such as dextrose, electrolytes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids in order to maintain its full health and performance.
Beet juice is rich in glucose, electrolytes and amino acids. This makes molasses not only a highly potent and readily available source of energy, but also provides the necessary electrolytes such as potassium and sodium, which are removed from the body through sweat during intensive work.
Potassium is essential for maintaining the performance potential of muscle cells; an undersupply leads to functional disorders of the heart and skeletal muscles.
Sodium and chloride regulate the water and electrolyte balance in the body and maintain tissue tension outside the cells. Deficiency symptoms occur particularly quickly during high performance demands and heavy sweat loss, with symptoms such as loss of appetite, weight loss and poor performance.
Calcium and magnesium form the basis of effective and coordinated muscle work and are primarily required for energy metabolism and the transmission of stimuli in the muscle cells. A deficiency results in increased excitability in horses as well as muscle tremors and muscle cramps.
B vitamins are essential for a healthy and efficient energy metabolism; they are particularly important for the resilience and functionality of the nerves and for the regeneration of the skin.
INFOBOX
Improving performance in sport horses
A good basic supply must also be rich in crude fiber for sport horses. Roughage (hay and straw) should also be provided at a rate of approx. 1.5 kg per 100 kg (live weight of horse).. Any additional energy and protein requirements can be met with easily digestible feed (concentrates) and oil. Performance horses in sport require quickly available electrolytes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids, especially during their peak performance and in the subsequent regeneration phase. If these components are lacking, there will be an early drop in performance and problematic metabolic situations during the phases between competitions or training sessions.
Compensating for performance deficits in horses with the right feed
During physical exertion, the horse loses important minerals (especially electrolytes) through sweat excretion. The need for B vitamins is also significantly increased during this time. Immediate compensation ensures an optimized energy metabolism, faster regeneration, better kidney performance and harmonizes the nervous system in sport horses.
