Instructions for proper use
Horses (500 kg): 50 g per day
Foals, young horses and ponies: 30 g per day
given with the feed. As a preventative measure, the dosage can be halved.
Due to the higher trace element content, the daily ration should not be more than doubled.
Feeding period
For maximum effectiveness, the feeding should be continued until the skin changes have subsided, but for at least 3 weeks. Preventive feeding should begin 2-3 weeks before the expected onset of the first skin changes and be maintained throughout the entire critical period. Administration over a longer period or throughout the year is advisable and can be done daily or every other day, depending on the severity of the changes.
General findings of nutritional science
The skin not only forms a protective layer for the body against the environment, but as the horse's largest and most versatile organ, it also transmits cold, heat, pressure, and pain. Many skin diseases, such as inflammation, hypersensitivity to insect bites, summer eczema, saddle sores, mud fever, itching, or wound healing disorders, can be a sign of overloading of the skin “organ”.
Herbs relieve the skin by stimulating the detoxifying and blood-purifying functions of the liver and kidneys. Anti-allergic components stabilize the skin. The reaction to insect bites is less severe.
Unsaturated fatty acids and Sulphur have an anti-inflammatory effect and promote rapid healing of skin changes.
Probiotics harmonize the body's natural defenses by stimulating the immune system in the intestine.
Kieselguhr strengthens and firms connective tissue and increases the skin's resistance.
Vitamin C and Iron stimulate collagen production and ensure rapid healing of skin changes.
Zinc is essential for skin regeneration and wound healing.
Biotin is particularly important for the quality of newly formed skin and hair. It contributes to the development of a smooth and supple skin surface.
Calcium and Magnesium have a stabilizing effect on cell membranes, significantly reducing inflammatory reactions to insect bites.
INFOBOX
Sensitive horse skin
As the horse's largest organ, the skin performs a variety of tasks. It not only protects the horse from stressful or pathogenic influences from the environment, but also supports the liver and kidneys as a detoxification organ. If a skin disorder occurs, itching, eczema and even skin fungus are the first clear signs of a disturbed metabolism in the horse. Allergies to black flies (summer eczema) affect horses during the summer grazing season. Feed allergies are often accompanied by severe itching, hives and fever. It is not uncommon for secondary infections to cause additional problems.
Treating skin diseases in horses
Every skin irritation should be carefully examined by a vet. This will clarify the extent to which bacteria, fungi or parasites are possible triggers. The functionality of the detoxification organs kidneys and liver can be assessed by means of a blood count and a deficiency in vital substances important for the horse's skin, such as zinc, copper and vitamin A, can be identified and treated accordingly.
