INFOBOX
What influence does vitamin A have on a dog's pigmentation?
The color of the dog's skin and coat depends primarily on the so-called melanin content of the affected cells. Melanin is a pigment and is influenced by hormones and vitamin A, among other things, in addition to genetic dispositions. Pigment disorders on the dog's nose, skin or lips indicate a lack of vitamin A or beta-carotene. However, zinc, copper and vitamins are also involved.

General findings of nutritional science
The special combination of these skin protection vitamins and trace elements effectively supports the skin's pigmentation process. In addition, vitamins A and E and the provitamin beta-carotene strengthen the immune system as antioxidants and protect the dog's skin from the effects of aggressive harmful substances that can lead to tumors, for example.
Beta-carotene is an important natural plant pigment that is needed by all animals in many ways. For example, it provides the color of egg yolk, milk, skin and mucous membranes. As dogs, like all mammals, cannot produce beta-carotene themselves, they are dependent on a sufficient supply from their food. If there is an undersupply of beta-carotene and vitamin A, the skin's immune defense decreases, the skin becomes flaky and loses its color.
Vitamin A intervenes in many important metabolic processes in the body and is particularly involved in the growth and protection of the skin.
Vitamin E maintains the function and health of the skin cells.
Zinc is essential for the smooth functioning, regeneration and wound healing of the skin. A deficiency leads to rough and flaky skin, skin thickening, hair loss and changes to pads and claws.
The body needs copper for numerous metabolic processes. It is essential for the regular pigmentation of the skin and for the formation of subcutaneous connective tissue.
